There are several different registration errors you might encounter. Details on each are below. You are responsible for knowing and following the policies and procedures outlined below. Questions should be directed to your academic advisor.
Important Notes:
- The BAS department can only review override requests for BAS, IT, and DFOR courses.
- BAS faculty cannot issue overrides. This process is initiated only by BAS advisors.
- Capacity overrides: In general, BAS will not issue capacity overrides. If a course is full, you must add yourself to the waitlist (if available). If you are unable to register or waitlist for a course but need to take it in Spring to ensure you can graduate on time, you must contact your academic advisor. Capacity overrides are only considered for students who register/contact their advisor as soon as their time ticket goes live. Students who forfeit their registration priority by registering late are not eligible for capacity overrides. Please view the full BAS Capacity Override Appeal policy here.
| Error | What It Means | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Prerequisite/Test Score | Many IT courses trigger this error even when students do meet the prerequisite requirements via their transfer credits. There are also some IT courses (such as IT 343) that have prerequisites that BAS students don’t need. | You need to request a Prerequisite/Test Score Override for each IT course every semester; overrides do not carry over between terms. You must request an override using this form. |
| Campus Restriction | This error occurs when a class section is restricted to a particular population, most often Mason Korea (MK) and Mason Online (MOL). | If you receive this error, first ensure that you are not attempting to register for an MK course. If the class is online, students receive this error because the class is reserved for MOL students. Sometimes, the full section is reserved, and sometimes a portion of the seats are reserved. There is no override for Campus Restriction errors. If you need to take online courses, then you should meet with your advisor to discuss becoming a Mason Online student. |
| Class Restriction | This error occurs when a course is restricted to students with a particular class standing (i.e. seniors only). The BAS capstone courses (BAS 490/492) have this restriction. There is no override for Class Restriction errors. | If you need to register for the BAS capstone to ensure timely graduation, contact your advisor for the next steps. Remember, you must contact your advisor as soon as your time ticket goes live. |
| Waitlist | This error means that the course is full, but there is a waitlist available. | You need to add yourself to the waitlist; it does not happen automatically. Use the drop-down box in your course enrollment area to select “add to waitlist” and click “register.” Reminder: Students on the waitlist are notified via email when a space becomes available. You will not be automatically added to an open seat. Once you receive a waitlist offer, you have 48 hours to follow the instructions to accept the space. If you do not respond within 48 hours, you will be removed from the waitlist. |
| Waitlist Closed | This error occurs when there is a waitlist for a class, but the waitlist has reached capacity. There is no override for this error. | If possible, you should register for a different section of the course. If you are unable to register and need the course to graduate on time, contact your academic advisor as soon as your time ticket goes live. |
| Repeat Hours Exceeded | Students are restricted to three attempts per course. For CEC and Business courses (including IT, MIS, MBUS, etc.), students will receive an error when attempting to register for the third attempt. For all other courses, the error will not occur until attempting to register for a fourth attempt. | Students must meet with an academic advisor before they can register for their final attempt at a course. Overrides will not be provided without consultation with an advisor. |
| Closed Section | This error indicates that the class is full. | You should waitlist (if available; see above) or choose another section. If you are unable to register and need the course to graduate on time, contact your academic advisor as soon as your time ticket goes live. |
